Tom Sykes does the double at Donington Park

- DENIS DROPPA

KAWASAKI’S Tom Sykes stamped his domination on his happy hunting ground by winning both World Superbike races at Donington Park circuit this past weekend.

The former champion, mostly outpaced by team-mate and reigning champion Jonathan Rea so far this season, earned his seventh and eighth consecutive wins at the circuit in Derbyshire, UK.

However, Rea crossed the line third and second in the two races to continue his incredible haul of points and still comfortably leads the WorldSBK championship.

In Saturday’s heat one Sykes took his seventh victory in a row at his home track, with Ducati’s Davide Giugliano coming home second after a drama-filled race.

A mistake from Sykes saw the Yorkshireman demoted down to fourth but he fought back to retake the lead and took the flag with a 2.8 sec advantage. Rea did well to score a fighting third after running off the track with gear selection problems.

Ducati’s Chaz Davies had a day to forget after crashing out of the lead, remounting and fighting his way back into the top ten, only to crash again – this time his race over.

In Sunday’s second race Sykes got the better of a thrilling battle with his teammate to win by two seconds, while Davies made amends for his race one crash by finishing third. Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori was fourth ahead of MV Agusta rider Leon Camier and former MotoGP star Nicky Hayden (Honda) in sixth.

Rea leads the championship on 293 points, ahead of Sykes (237) and Davies (231).

The next round is at Misano in Italy on June 19.
