A whole lot of African designs and patterns feature in new dress codes

RISING talent had their chance to shine yesterday at the start of SA Fashion Week (SAFW).

Seven designers showcased their creations for the Autumn/Winter 2017 season to industry professionals, stylists and fashionistas as part of the Sunglass Hut New Talent Search.

HerRitual started the talent search with rich browns and dark colours on heavy-set fabric.

Siyathokoza gave a twist on the Seshweshwe, pairing it with warm colours in asymmetrical cut-outs with leather hints.

Etsa kept it solid with black and grey tones and fitting form wear.

Sheila-Madge had a playful collection full of colour and abstract pieces.

Nu|base gave a beautiful feminine touch to her looks with clean cuts and frills in warm earth tones.

Mieke brought back a 1980s gymslip style with neutrals and creams that came to life with hints of blue knitwear accessories.

Lumin, who showcased last and was the ultimate winner, used solid blacks, structured and heavy cottons.

The talent search was mainly about how designers could take their business to the next level.

Clive Rundle, who never disappoints, also showcased his looks for the autumn/winter season last night alongside Judith Atelier, Somerset Jane, Sober and Greerkyle. Rundle focused on prints, colour and multi-functional pieces for the cold seasons.

At the opening party on Monday, some of the celebrities in attendance gave their view on the looks and trends for this summer.

The ever-stylish Maps Maponyane said he appreciated that people were now starting to incorporate a whole lot of African designs and African patterns into their dress codes.

“The fitted-suit movement is still going strong as well; guys should look to linen suits for our hot weather. Another must-have is a good pair of sandals – but you must have the feet for it, too,” he said.

Reality star Blue Mbombo gave her five must-have items for spring. “You have to have a pair of amazing shades (sunglasses), shorts – to show a bit of skin – crop tops, flowy flowery dresses, and of course the most important must-have is a beautiful smile.”

SAFW is all about the business of fashion and this year they have partnered with Woolworths as the exclusive retail sponsor.

“They are a leader in fashion retail and we are looking forward to building a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership, growing the creative fashion industry in South Africa and in Africa,” Mbombo said.

“We are excited to give our designers the opportunity to make their mark in the competitive world of fashion retail,” said SAFW chief executive Lucille Booyzen. The SAFW show will be on until Saturday.
