DA gets greedy

-

RATEPAYERS will recently have received, with their rates accounts, a notice of a change in electricity tariffs.

By unilateral action of the City, from October 2016 tens of thousands of citizens will be charged a whopping and exorbitant 60% increase in the cost of electricity.

This comes about by the City’s decision to terminate the lifeline 2 tariff for all properties with a value in excess of R400 000 and change to a different tariff decided by the City.

On the lifeline 2 tariff, a citizen consuming 350 units a month would have paid just under R350 per month.

For the same consumption the City’s charge will now increase to R560 88, just more than a 60% increase. This comes on top of above-inflation increases in municipal rates for these properties.

This affects tens of thousands of households. The DA doesn’t care if you can’t afford a 60% increase in electricity cost, or that such an increase is unprecedented even by Eskom standards. You must just pay or your electricity connection will be terminated.

No doubt those responsible for this will collect huge performance bonuses for the massive increase in profits in the City’s monopoly over electricity supply to Cape Town citizens.

Perhaps in due course the DA will also learn the lesson currently being absorbed by the ANC, that unbridled greed will result in a loss of electoral support. Jim Garner Cape Town
