Tourists wowed by impromptu performance

- Michael Nkalane

POP-OPERA singer Selim Kagee dazzled fans with an impromptu performance on Table Mountain yesterday.

He mesmerised fans with his rendition of Cry For Love, the title song of his debut album, with young and old choosing to take selfies with him over sight-seeing.

Kagee’s Table Mountain performance formed part of his preparation for his Saturday and Sunday shows.

Teenager Alexandria Schäfer vowed to attend the show on Saturday. “I can’t afford to miss such a beautiful voice. I enjoyed his songs.”

Austrian tourist Andrea Kostin said she would extend her holiday to attend both performances. She said Kagee’s voice reminded her of Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.

“I’ve not listened to such a voice for a long time. This guy lives opera. He is well trained and groomed. You can hear he’s not a chancer.”

Kagee, who hails from Cape Town’s southern suburbs, has been singing for the past 20 years. He said the highlight of his career so far was when he sang the national anthem in 2014, ahead of the rugby international between the Springboks and the Wallabies.

“My songs warm hearts because they are very romantic. They uplift and inspire souls.” Turning to the concerts, Kagee said: “Fans can expect to hear re-imagined renditions of evergreen songs such as Wonderful Tonight, Surrender, O Sole Mio, Can’t Help Falling In Love. He’ll be accompanied by an orchestra and an Indian ensemble. The show starts at 8.15pm on Saturday and at 5pm on Sunday.

Ticket prices are R300 and R350, and can be purchased at Computicket on 0861 915 8000, online at www.computicket.com or at any Shoprite-Checkers outlet for Saturday’s performance.

His Sunday performance is aimed at corporates.
