Heavy rock chops planned for Hillcrest Quarry ’Tribute Fest’

-

VETERAN Cape Town musician Patrick Canovi, well known for his Rock Legends of Yesteryear tribute shows performed by his Kiss the Sky Show Band, has announced that he has taken over the running of Tribute Fest 2016. The gig will be held at The Hillcrest Quarry on Boxing Day, Monday December 26. The production is an annual event first launched in 2014.

“This is the first time I have taken on a project as big as this, but I hope to turn it into a huge success, as the standard is going to be way higher than previous years with regards to not only the artists, but to sound and lighting as well,” says Canovi.

“When I was first approach by Mike Crawford of Hillcrest Quarry to do this, I was a bit reluctant, but after having given it some thought, I realized that with my four decades of experience in the rock music industry and the fact that I not only know most of the musicians, but also have good relationships with them, it could be a nice challenge. Everything is on track and the cooperation of all parties concerned has been amazing,” he adds.

Hillcrest Quarry has a permanent outdoor stage. Patrons are welcome to bring blankets, deck chairs and umbrellas on the day, plus, there will also be a VIP area at extra cost.

The program starts at 1pm with Elvis Presley performed by James Marais, followed by Deep Purple by The Deep Purple Tribute Band at 2pm, Neil Diamond by Johan Liebenberg at 3pm At 4pm Outrages will star Kiss the Sky with vocalist Dean Coche as Alice Cooper, Natasha Malherbe as Janis Joplin, Natalie Mostert as Amy Winehouse and Canovi as Hendrix. At 5pm expect a Bob Marley segment by Rivertones, followed by Tina Turner by Ramaine Barreiro at 6pm. Rolling Stones by Kiss the Sky will feature Jeandre Swanepoel at 7pm. At 8pm listen to Bon Jovi by Mark Haze, at 9pm hear Led Zeppelin by Kiss the Sky and the finale at 10pm will be AC/DC by The Brothers from Hell. Although some of the artists are better known for their original material Canovi says that “when in this role, they take their tributes very seriously, with some getting so close to the real thing, that if you were to close your eyes, you would think it the original artist.”

Over time, guitarist Canovi has earned some serious streetcred for his blazing solos and rock heavy chops. His CD Through the Years, which received rave reviews internationally, will also be on sale. It was recorded over a period of 18 month in SA and mastered in London. And although he is best known here for being Cape Town’s own Santana, Jimmy Page, Hendrix and many other guitar heroes, to whom he pays tribute to once a month in his shows at Hillcrest Quarry, Through the Years is his own best guitar playing in songs he has written over a long musical career.
