Police step up raids on drug dens
POLICE and law enforcement began operations yesterday to ensure that gang and drug activity would be curbed over the festive season.
The Lockdown Operation is part of the provincial police’s festive season drive in gang hot spots located throughout the province. Yesterday, the operation tackled crime in Manenberg.
Provincial police commissioner Khombinkosi Jula was to join the operation, but he did not make an appearance.
Five alleged drug dens were raided as officers conducted searches after tip-offs on narcotics and illegal firearms.
Manenberg station commander Enolium Josephs said they were addressing an upsurge in gang activity. He said the community co-operated yesterday, whereas there was often conflict during such operations.
Residents watched as police entered premises, including the home of alleged HL’s gang boss Rashied Staggie’s righthand-man, Rollen “Watson” Olince in Thames Way. While there was nothing illegal found at the his home, police did find a stash of money at a neighbouring residence and dagga at another location.
Renoster Walk resident Shahiedah Abrahams was upset as one of the homes raided belonged to her daughter. “They are supposed to have warrants and can’t just enter homes and do as they please,” said Abrahams.
Another residentsaid: “These officers are doing their jobs. We need to support them as our neighbourhoods are being overrun and the officials must do more to rid us of gangs.”
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said three suspects had been arrested. “They will appear in court soon,” he said. More operations were scheduled to take place throughout the Western Cape.
