Jolly Carp Jazz On The Vlei Saturday

- Staff Reporter

ERNIE Smith, one of South Africa’s top guitarists, will be headlining the sixth annual “Jazz on the Vlei” festivities tomorrow at the Jolly Carp Organic market in Retreat. Smith recently launched his new album and he will be performing at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival next year.

Jason Roberts will be spinning the decks for the day while Gary van Dyk will be the MC for the Sunset Festival. Petrina Roberts says it’s going to be a festival par excellence.

The line-up includes FAZE4 under the musical leadership of Frank Cuddumbey, with Abigail Bagley on vocals. The Rosa Choir project, who recently celebrated their fourth anniversary, will also be performing on the day.

“They sing in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa fluently, and collectively bind us together. More importantly, they just have great fun on the stage showcasing their various talents, which makes people feel proud to be South African,” says Roberts.

The festival highlights include Odwa Bongo, a singer, songwriter, composer and performer, who was classically trained by the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir and is inspired by African music and jazz. He has represented South Africa in South Korea and has performed at the Grahamstown Jazz Festival.

Something else to look forward to is the Encore SA, a four-piece band of aspiring musicians. The band was formed in April at the Cape Music Institute and consists of Batsi Kaingidza (guitar), Clarence Grootboom on keyboards, Dylan Downes on bass guitar and Jermaine Keith Truter on drums.

The tickets are R150, which includes a R30 food voucher. Food vendors will be on hand for refreshments. Guests are urged to bring a Christmas gift to donate to a children’s project in Lavender Hill.
