Placement poser

- Zenobia Errington Diep River

LET’S hope we find clarity before January. I have followed all the necessary channels and I am slowly losing hope in the people in power.

Why is it that I have to wait till January to finally be assisted. I did everything by the book yet to my surprise I was disappointed to find out that I had not been accepted at any of the schools I had completed registration for.

How do I explain to my daughter that her single-parent mother who is earning less than R6 000 a month and pays R2 100 month for crèche could not find a school willing to accept her.

Nor has the department of education tried to help us.

I did everything that was required; even personally harassing Fairview Primary to assist in placing her as I attended that school.

Why does one have to throw toys out the cot to be heard, or even tweet and send massive e-mails. I am not looking for attention, but want to be heard. I want my daughter to have a bright future just as every rich parent out there.

I do not receive any assistance financially, yet I am prepared to fork out R2 500 each month and none of the schools including the great Bergvliet Primary is that expensive.

Is it a racial thing? I’m coloured with a white man’s surname.

Is it a salary bracket issue? (sorry you do not meet our minimum requirement, we need you to earn R16 000).

Despite receiving all these responses, I know of parents who were accepted from Mitchells Plain, who are placing their first child at one of these schools with no sibling there. But I was told I did not reside within the 3km radius of the school, hence the rejection.

Why do schools have the right to turn a child away? Why is a paying single mother not entitled to some education privileges?
