BEAUTY OF ART IS IN THE HANDBAG

- Staff Reporter

THE PROMOTION of collaboration remains an important theme in the creative sphere. From fashion, to decor, to music and art, creatives are coming together to create capsule ranges that complement their unique aesthetics.

Concept brand BLAC Designs collaborated with South African artist, David Brits to launch an image collaboration.

This project is the first in a series of artist collaborations planned by BLAC for the year.

The project takes inspiration from an artistic method that Brits explored while in residence at the St Moritz Art Academy in Switzerland.

Here he was mentored by renowned contemporary artists, Daniele Buetti and Marcel van Eeden.

Encouraged to engage with the impressive mountains and natural splendour of the surrounding area of St Moritz, Brits was struck by the beauty of the alpine flowers he encountered on his daily walks.

He began a collection of mountain plants and made high-resolution scans of them in his studio.

He found that a scanner was a marvellous tool for making pictures of three-dimensional objects. The results were magical and surprising.

This method of working was further explored in the Slough Series (2015), ghostly images of snake skins, that were exhibited as part of Snake Man, the artist’s third solo show held at SMITH Gallery in the city.

In Brits’s collaboration with BLAC, each image features one of six edition bags superimposed within scenes of mystical foliage.

BLAC founder and creative director Hamzeh Al Farahneh and Brits wanted to combine their two disciplines in a creative and novel way. The result is a series of images showcasing the six edition bags and bringing them to life with depth and detail.

“I’ve been a fan of Brits’s work for a very long time and it is a great honour for me to work with him on the first instalment of BLAC’s artist collaborations for 2017,” says Al Farahneh.

“With these projects we aim to align BLAC with artists and expand our footprint in the arts community.

“I have always seen BLAC as a brand that is an outlet for artistic expression and not a typical fashion label.

“We only work on a project basis and don’t follow the fashion calendar.”
