‘4 awards a feather in Independent’s cap’

-

NEWS of Indy landing four Global Media Awards is indeed cause for celebration. It is a feather in the cap of the team that was pictured on the front page of the Cape Times. Moreover, its being recognised as the “best in Africa” is an accolade richly to be savoured.

The fact that independent photographer Phando Jikelo has been shortlisted for a global award and that the Durban-based POST won the Gopio award reflects well on the general health of the media in South Africa.

It is good that global media recognises Indy’s role in combating racism and supporting citizen activism. Both of these are necessary for the emergence of a healthy society, a common national identity and a properly functioning democracy.

At a time when politicians have tragically reversed and squandered the immeasurable gains made by Nelson Mandela and cast a pall over our society, the independent media, the responsible judiciary and the unflinching activists in our society have allowed their light to dispel some of the gloom.

One day, in the post-Zuma period, South Africa will, through the selfless endeavours of its honest citizens, again emerge as the great and shining hope of the world.

It is not only the rating agencies who have us under the spotlight but, as we can glean from the above, other organisations and institutions as well.

The tremendous contribution of Thuli Madonsela as public protector, for instance, won her international recognition and admiration also.

Dr Makhosi Khoza is also distinguishing herself as an outstanding and fearless MP.

This is a time in our country when we are generally shorn of hope, watching scurrilous scandal after scandal unfold every day on TV.

Good news, from wherever it comes, therefore creates the confidence that there are people in our society who will lift us up through their singular achievements and unflinching determination to serve the people of South Africa to the best of their ability.

Therefore just as you feel encouraged through the deserved recognition given to you, we too feel uplifted.

Congratulations to all who contributed to the landing of the Global Media Awards. Farouk Cassim Milnerton
