Eid ul Fitr well-wishes

- Staff Writer

PRESIDENT Nelson Mandela’s grandson and MP Mandla Mandela has extended well-wishes to thousands of Muslims celebrating Eid-ul-fitr, which marks the end of Ramadaan.

“At this special time we think not of ourselves but of those who suffer throughout the world, especially our sisters and brothers who have endured immeasurable loss, pain and violation of their dignity in Syria and Palestine.

“Palestinians have lived through nearly five decades of displacement, alienation and deprivation. This Eid we call on all who love justice and righteousness – wherever you are, and regardless of your religion – to remember the daily indignities meted out against the people of Palestine… to remember the six million Palestinians forced into exile, the millions more living under the yoke of oppression in the occupied territories,” he said.

Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille wished Muslims a blessed Eid. “As the holy month of Ramadaan comes to an end, on behalf of the City of Cape Town I wish the Muslim community a blessed Eid Mubarak. As is the custom, especially at this time of the year, we have seen how the Muslim community has validated the makings of a caring city through their acts of charity and generosity towards those in need. We are eternally grateful for these efforts, which demonstrate the vital role that residents play in helping us build a caring city.

“Eid Mubarak. May the blessings of the Almighty Allah be with you on this auspicious day,” De Lille said.

In Rylands Estate yesterday, about 200 volunteers participated in an initiative hosted by Nakhlistan to feed about 85 000 people. See Page 8
