Destroying a school of value to the community

-

THE city’s demolition of a so-called “illegal school” in the Joe Slovo informal settlement, which appears to have been the catalyst for the rioting and R2 million damage to property in and around the area, seems to be heavyhanded.

I do not know what constitutes an “illegal school”, surely though, any school that admits children of parents who are the poorest of the poor, has merit.

If such a school teaches simple English, basic sums and basic writing etc. to children whose parents cannot afford school fees, bus fees, uniforms etc. then such an “illegal school” must be performing a useful service to the Joe Slovo settlement, whether it is deemed illegal or not.

The city needs to think carefully before they act in such a reckless manner.

To destroy something that is useful, is just stupid. Kevin Meineke Hout Bay
