Youth winds bands to give dream reunion concert in Cape Town

- Staff Reporter

TWO of the best of their kind, the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPUWE) and Germany’s award-winning Ulm Youth Wind Orchestra, will join forces on Sunday at 4pm.

The concert, at the New Apostolic Church at the Silvertown Auditorium, will feature Brandon Phillips and Josef Christ conducting their own ensembles and then the ensembles will unite for two pieces, Gounod’s Festive Dance and Miriam Makeba/Jerry Ragovoy’s Pata Pata, both arranged for wind band.

The award-winning Ulm Youth Wind Orchestra made contact with the CPYWE years ago when it made a donation of instruments to enable talented young musicians to reach their potential through performance experience as well as good teaching. It has been a dream for the German band to return to Cape Town after its appearance in 1999 and, with the support of the Goethe Institute, it is set to become a reality.

The CPYWE will play works for or arranged for a wind band by Holst, Piazzolla and Gershwin. The Ulm Orchestra will play a selection of works including from Fiddler on the Roof and Phil Collins’ Collection.

Tickets R50, R30 for children/OAP from Computicket and at door. Call Marvin Weavers on 021 410 9809/073 852 7829.
