Man necklaced, wave of criminal incidents

- Chevon Booysen

A MAN was found dead, burnt and with a tyre around his neck in Delft South yesterday morning.

By deadline, it was still unclear why the man was murdered but a member of the Delft South Community Watch said he was “grabbed by men in a Toyota Avanza on Saturday night”.

“The man lived in Kamferfoelie Street and was taken by men in this vehicle on Saturday night while he was sitting in the yard. His father said he did not return home on Saturday night.

“On Sunday morning, I saw smoke a few streets away from my home and on investigation I saw this man’s body already burnt and dead with a tyre around his neck,” the member said.

Police are yet to confirm the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said: “The circumstances surrounding the death of a 25-year-old man are being investigated after his burnt body was discovered in Cheesewood Street, Delft, this morning (yesterday) at around 1:15am. No one has been arrested yet and the motive is yet to be established.”

In an unrelated incident, police reported a successful conviction of a Manenberg murderer on Friday at the Western Cape High Court.

Moegamat Sedick Davids was given 28 years’ imprisonment for various charges.

“The sentencing comes after the accused was found guilty on charges of murder (18 years), possession of a firearm (seven years) and possession of ammunition (three years). He was also handed 5 years’ imprisonment in terms of Poca (Prevention of Organised Crime Act) by the Western Cape High Court,” police spokesperson Sinathi Joni said.

In another incident, police apprehended two suspects in Lwandle for the possession of drugs on Friday night.

Police spokesperson Traut said: “Our endeavours to rid the streets of drugs resulted in the arrest of two suspects for being in possession… and a large amount of cash, suspected to be the proceeds of drug trafficking.

“Lwandle police conducted a search operation in Malunga Street and arrested a 27-yearold woman and a 28-year-old man for being in possession of a tub of tik, six packets of tik, scales and cash.”

The suspects will appear in court today.

Police arrested a 28-year-old suspect with an assault rifle on Friday on the corner of Strand Street and Bill Bezuidenhout Drive in Bellville where a 59-year-old taxi driver was shot and wounded.

“Following a tip-off, a suspect was arrested after he abandoned his weapon,” Traut said. The suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court today.
