Drought levy unfair
IT IS with much disappointment that I address the issue of the proposed Drought Charge, to be levied by the City of Cape Town on owners of residential properties, whose property exceeds a value of R 400 000.
It is these very owners who have, in many cases, taken the steps needed to reduce their water usage dramatically, and adhere to the set limits.
A much fairer system would be for a charge to be levied on those who continue to overuse and abuse their water allocation – backdating is necessary, because sufficient warning of the water usage limits have been given.
If what I hear from folk who live in a nearby township is to be believed, no interest is shown in reducing water usage by them or their fellow residents.
This is considered “not our problem” and taps are left to run with the City of Cape Town doing nothing to address it.
This makes the proposed Drought Charge doubly unfair. Erica Liebenberg Somerset West
