Make wasters pay

-

WHILE I fully understand the Council’s need to raise additional revenue to cover the costs of the various water enhancement projects I strongly object to the proposal of how this revenue is to be raised and feel it is ill-conceived and lacks proper thought.

We have over a period of months reduced our monthly usage from nearly 30kL to 10kL per the last and current invoice; my late mother was paying rates only on her apartment and used minimal water, the cost of which is, I understand, borne by the developers and recovered in the levy.

We have introduced many of the water-saving suggestions made by the city such as, but not limited to, a solar blanket for the pool, recycling system for backwash etc. And all at no mean cost. Your proposal does not take into account the number of persons staying in a dwelling and most importantly the average monthly water consumption on which I feel this surcharge should be based.

Your proposal is inequitable and incorrectly biased – make the people that abuse water use and who have played a large part in getting us into this mess PAY UP!!

Maybe if our president sold Nkandla we could use the proceeds towards a desalination plant, which I realise are quite expensive, but work very well in Dubai, for example, which is in a desert.

I trust I will receive a response in time. John Paul Anderson Durbanville
