Grant makes no sense

-

YOU MAY be aware that the City of Cape Town has proposed to implement a drought levy, payable by all homeowners whose house is valued at over R400 000.

In fairness to those who are going to have to pay this levy, would you consider investigating the “indigent grant” that gets allocated to residents with a property valuation of less than R400 000.

This grant of R133 is reflected under the water consumption section on the municipal account and implies that the City “rewards” people for water usage.

This is on top of the 100% rates and taxes rebate, the 100% refuse removal rebate and also the 6kl free water that they receive!

These homeowners will also be exempt from the drought levy, but I do feel that in this time of crisis all Capetonians need to make a sacrifice and the “indigent grant” under the water consumption section does not make any sense.

Also, when the water restrictions were implemented the City increased the water consumption tariffs. What happened to all this extra money before the residents started with their watersaving efforts? Malcolm Ulrich Cape Town
