-

WITH a disturbing sea tide on scene on the Western Cape coastline, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), in a sequel of emergency alerts, were just in time to save a 36-year-old crewman who had difficulty at anchor off-shore of Velddrif on the West Coast on Monday.

The station commander at NSRI Airborne Sea Rescue (ASR), Marius Hayes, said the SA Air Force (SAAF) 22 Squadron, WC government Health EMS and NSRI ASR were activated to assist the man who had suffered an injured hand on a 292m bulk carrier Great Sui at 3.06pm, on Monday.

NSRI Kommetjie station commander Ian Klopper said: “We used our NSRI fire pump and hoses to redirect the water flow away from residents’ houses until the Water Department arrived and repaired the burst water pipe.”

In Table Bay, the NSRI sea rescue stations along the Atlantic Seaboard – Kommetjie, Hout Bay, Bakoven, Table Bay and the ASR were placed on voluntary alert while monitoring the progress of the Yacht Day Off heading to Cape Town from Hermanus.

NSRI Table Bay station commander Quentin Botha said two crews were aboard and under sail reporting to be comfortable and making good headway but with no motor power and an anchor that the skipper felt would not be sufficient considering the strong winds. – Staff Writer
