Mother City’s itinerary of events

THIS FESTIVE season the Mother City has an itinary of magical social experience­s, as you take in the people, culture, food, music and all the events Cape Town has to offer this holiday.

GIGS:

Cape Minstrel Carnival: A Cape Town tradition that sees the streets fill up with bright colours, songs, trumpets, drums and whistles.

The Cape Town Street Parade will take place on January, 2 at the Grand Parade in Cape Town.

Nama Jazz Series: Well-known Cape Town-based band Top Dog SA will be taking audiences on an indigenous journey with their second instalment of Nama Jazz Series.

The group will be drawing music from an ancient well and fusing it with modern Cape Jazz traditions and genres.

This presentati­on will be underlined with the narrative – “THIS IS WHO WE ARE”.

Kongo Elektro: For a jazz party with sounds of folk, zouk, rumba, kwassa, Mapumba Cilombo and Daniel Eppel’s acoustic show is sure to bring out something new.

They will be at the Olympia Bakery in Kalk Bay on January 6.

Tickets are available on Quicket at a cost of R120. For a mix of music (classical, world, jazz) with dance and word in a theatrical setting.

The HA!Man duo will be at the venue this today at 8pm. A cost of R150 will get you in on the action.

Celebrate Boxing Day Sizzled Style (December 26): For a summer party on the grounds of Castle of Good Hope, December 26 will once again play host to this all-day event of music and food to end off the year on a fiery note.

Tickets cost R150 at Computicke­t and R200 at the door.

Tribute Fest Concert (December 26): For the fourth year running the Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanvill­e will be featuring the best golden oldies at the Tribute Fest Concert on December 26.

Local artists will perform their renditions of the sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Tina Turner and more.

Tickets are available at Computicke­t at a cost of R180.

Hermanus Craft Beer Festival: With live music, beer, food trucks and activities for kids, today will see the sea town filled with fun.

There will be an array of local craft beers to taste from brewers like Ysterbru, Old Potter’s Country Inn and Brewpub, Elysium Brewing Company, Woodstock Brewery and more.

Tickets to this event start at R50/p for kids under 17 years old.

Adult tickets are R100/p available via quicket.co.za.

There will be no ATMs on site, so festival goers are encouraged to bring cash, as well as blankets and camp chairs.

WINE ROUTES:

Cape Town is home to some of the world’s best wines and finding these gems on scenic mountainou­s farms can be just an hour’s drive out of the city.

Spice Route: A 45-minute drive from the city, located in the beautiful foot hills of Paarl.

Boasting a selection of wines, beer, chocolates and a selection of food at a mix of restaurant­s, overlookin­g vineyards and mountains.

Come for a tasting, a picnic or a meal at one of the restaurant­s, the Spice Route offers a variety of things to do for the whole family.

Boschendal Wine Estate: Nestled in the picturesqu­e Franschhoe­k valley just out of Stellenbos­ch, the farm features a wide selection of reds, whites and Méthode Cap Classiques (MCC).

The House of JC Le Roux Sparkling Wine: Situated on Devon Valley Road Stellenbos­ch.

If sparkling wine is your thing at a cost of R90, the tasting room staff will take you through 5 Méthode Cap Classiques from their range.

Tasting experience­s are also available at an additional cost.

Franschhoe­k Wine Tram: Passengers board the hop-on hop-off tour and experience a unique way to see the Franschhoe­k Valley as they journey through rolling vineyards in a double-decker tram and openair tram-bus visiting eight wine estates and showcasing a separate part of the Franschhoe­k Valley.

Simonsig: For three generation­s, Simonsig Wine Estate has produced a selection of red, white and sparkling wines that express the unique character of Stellenbos­ch.

Offering tastings and cellar tours from R50 per person. Located at Kromme Rhee Road, Stellenbos­ch.

RESTAURANT­S:

Rands: Situated in the heart of Khayelitsh­a, Rands is a heaven for good music, food and quality entertainm­ent, with signature meat dishes accompanie­d by real township-inspired sides like our popular chakalaka, creamy spinach and pap.

Rands also knows how to throw a party with a full line-up of local DJs playing non-stop music ranging from mostly house to hip hop and when the mood allows, some RnB.

Sea Palace: For the best Chinese food in the Mother City, look no further for a selection of authentic flavourful dishes.

While the decor may be simple, the food is nothing short of tasty. Situated at 2 Long Street in the CBD.

Kloof Street House: In richly furnished dining rooms in a Victorian house with bar and leafy gardens, Kloof Street House offers oysters for starters with a shallot vinaigrett­e, cucumber, caviare and lemon, Morrocan-spiced lamb rump served with herb couscous, a red cabbage slaw and yoghurt dressing. Situated at 30 Kloof Street, Gardens.

Moyo at Eden on the Bay Blouberg: Located along the West Coast, Eden on the Bay with views of Table Mountain and Robben Island, Moyo looks over them, just 25 minutes from the CBD.

On offer is contempora­ry African cuisine with an exciting blend of design, food, and entertainm­ent for a truly unique experience.

Moyo Kirstenbos­ch: Same culinary experience in the heart of the botanical gardens.

The Grand Café: The perfect location right on the beachfront for a great summer day of drinks or cocktails with a light meal overlookin­g the ocean.

The restaurant serves an array of seafood dishes with a meat dish or two for varying taste-buds.

Located at Haul Road, V&A Waterfront.

The Granary Café at the Silo Hotel: With amazing views of Cape Town, on the sixth floor of the new Thomas Heatherwic­k-designed Silo Hotel and a gourmet menu headed by chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert.

The Granary Café serves breakfast, afternoon tea and an excellent Sunday roast.
