- Staff Writer

THE finale of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s first gala concert at the Artscape Theatre brought 15 000 people to their feet, calling for an encore.

The orchestra held its gala concert at the weekend, which showcased the musical talents of local stars, most of whom participated for the first time in a mainstream symphony concert with a full professional orchestra.

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra embarked on this exciting project to help catapult local talent from various disciplines into the spotlight.

This celebration of talent by artists across Cape Town’s communities was conducted by Brandon Phillip.

The programme, directed by Aviva Pelham, with Nawaal Howa as MC, offered something for everyone to enjoy.

The line-up of talent included 2017 Idols winner Paxton Fielies, 2017 The Voice SA winner Craig Lucas, Kyle Shepherd, Khayelitsha-based singing group Heavenly Quartez, members of Zip Zap Circus, The Young Men Malay Choir, Talitha Luiters and many more.

Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra chief executive Louis Heyneman said: “Cape Town has an incredible array of talent, much of which never has the opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra.

“Their time has come. The purpose of the concert was to create a professional platform for musicians, and we will certainly do this again.”
