DA losing credibility and must stop being petty post-Zuma

-

NOW that former president Jacob Zuma is history, his removal for so many years now seemingly the DA’s raison d’être.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane and his cohorts have fallen back on their old ways of negativity and criticism of everything the ANC does or proposes.

Haven’t they heard of constructive criticism? For sure, ANC actions under Zuma were an unmitigated disaster, and the ANC must be roundly condemned for visiting this plague upon us all. President Cyril Ramaphosa is like a breath of fresh air, giving us all hope for the first time in years.

Make no error, it will be no simple task to put SA Inc on the road to recovery, but surely he and his new team are the right people for the job.

His invitation to all political groups to work with him was almost unparalleled in our history. So disappointing then to see the DA failing to rise in Parliament to wish him well. How pathetic and small-minded. How rude. The DA has criticised Ramaphosa for not speaking out against Zuma earlier. If he had stuck his head above the parapet, it would have been shot off.

We would then be sitting with another Zuma as president, a certain downgrade and ultimately countrywide anarchy. Politics is a game of patience and timing and Ramaphosa has shown that he is a past master at both.

After the announcement of the 1% VAT rise, in a knee-jerk reaction, Maimane started a petition against it. Never mind that it is one of the few instantaneous ways to generate funds so vital for the fiscus.

No question the ANC government got us into this hole, but we are in it now, so bleating about it is futile. Sober analysis of the facts will show that the VAT increase affects the “so-called rich” much more than the poor, for the simple reason that the bulk of what the poor buy is zero-rated Q.E.D.

The DA claims Cape Town is the best-run city. This may be so, but their delay in putting the current water restrictions in place sooner is reminiscent of the governing of towns and cities run by the very party they are always criticising.

Many people are disgusted with Patricia de Lille’s treatment by the DA and all the public squabbling.

They believe her denial of any wrongdoing.

The DA has, I aver, lost a lot of credibility lately, so they mustn’t be surprised that if Ramaphosa pulls a rabbit out of the hat, that many, myself included, may decide to put our Xs next to his photo on the ballot paper come 2019.

Maimane, you have been warned. Gavin Hillyard Somerset West
