Lending a hand to those who need it
WITH reference to “NGOs desperate for funding, good volunteers” (Cape Times, February 28).
The non-governmental sector and the non-profit organisations are a vital cog in the sociology of South Africa today.
National government is incapable and unable to provide many of the needs of our citizens. Due to the fact that over 30 percent of the citizenry are unemployed and unable to sustain themselves, they often turn to the NGO sector for their wherewithal.
Many volunteers work around the clock with no payment and certainly no thanks, in order to ensure that the most vulnerable in our society are well looked after.
Due to the government welfare coffers being raided by many individuals, they are almost on their knees and certainly unable to lodge a need and help out many of the NGOs.
We, the citizens who have jobs, need to ensure that we give until it hurts.
The NGO sector is able to deliver services much more efficiently than most of the government organisations and most of the NGOs make sure every penny counts.
Those individuals who cannot donate can at least donate of their time and their expertise so as to ensure that people are helped in even the smallest way. Michael Bagraim Highlands Estate
