Sound of Music actress keeps it in the family

CHILD acting may be a fear for some parents, but actress Lindy Abromowitz-Sachs believes art will provide her daughters with an opportunity to be exposed to new people and experience under the umbrella of commitment and dedication.

Many will remember Abromowitz-Sachs from local productions of Grease, the hilarious Offbeat Broadway series and the PACT production of The Sound Of Music starring Aviva Pelham as Maria von Trapp.

This year Abromowitz-Sachs’ daughters, Shani and Lia, are feverishly rehearsing for The Sound Of Music, set to open at Artscape later this month.

Shani and Lia will be alternating the roles of Marta von Trapp and Brigitta von Trapp respectively.

Lindy insists that “they came to me and asked if they could audition”.

“I knew that the show was one that both children and adults could relate to, and of course, is one of the most popular shows of all time.

“I wanted to ensure that my children would have a healthy experience and knew the importance of guiding them along,” said Abromowitz-Sachs.

“Both of my daughters had been involved in Evita, and knowing the team that the girls would be working with really set my mind at ease.”

She said she wanted to instill principles of respect and hard work in her daughters.

“The trick, I find, is to help children find what they are passionate about and then allow them to chase their dreams, and become respectful and happy members of society along the way,” said Abromowitz-Sachs.

The theatre mother said she was certain her children were in safe hands.

“The children are certainly in good hands, with highly skilled directors and chaperones offering structure to the rehearsal process, without squashing the element of fun.

“There are three teams of Von Trapp children, allowing each child time on stage and off while balancing school and home life.”

The children are led by Carmen Pretorius, playing the role of Maria.

“The character of Maria is such a great role model.

“First of all, she has a fantastic sense of humour, she is responsible, she is also the backbone to the story”, said Abromowitz-Sachs.

The Sound Of Music opens at Artscape on May6 and runs until May 27.

Tickets are available from computicket.com and range in price from R100 to R500.
