Stellies choir to take their talent to Wales
HAILED as one of the country’s most outstanding youth development and choral programmes, the Stellenbosch University choir will perform a third gala concert before they jet off to woo the world.
The choir is to host the local event before leaving for Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod in North Wales.
Travelling to Wales via London and Bath, where they have been invited to perform, the choir will participate in the prestigious world event from June 29 to July 15.
The Llangollen Eisteddfod, in addition to being a world-renowned choral music festival, is also a celebration of the music, dance and culture of nations from around the globe.
Participation in this festival is an opportunity for showcasing talent and learning, sharing and gaining profound experience of not only the best choral music in the world, but also of the cultures and values that produce them.
Martin Viljoen, the university’s spokesperson, said for the past 82 years the Stellenbosch University choir had reflected the changes of wider society and today they stand as a testament to the power of music in bringing about diversity and harmony across societal divides.
In 2017 the choir were ranked first on the Interkultur list of 1 000 international choirs for the 5th consecutive year after participating in the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, an event organised by Interkultur in July last year.
Viljoen said the choir could be seen performing at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch tomorrow at 1pm (free); May 5 at 8pm; May 6 at 4.30pm; and May 10 at 1pm (free).
They will perform a third gala concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow at 4.30pm on May 13.
All tickets, except for the free lunch hour concerts, are available at Computicket.
On their return to South Africa they will participate at the Interkultur World Choir Games, this year being held in Tshwane, as featured special guests.
