At Nu Metro, Canal Walk took a toll on the young Sanjay, especially as his relationship with his father was somewhat estranged. Sanjay almost immediately succumbed to the lure of alcohol and drugs, being introduced to them by a friend.
Adding to his woes was the knowledge that his mother was dying of cancer.
He was also labelled a terrorist and spent years trying to fight this in court, in and out of prison.
At its core this is a heart-rending story of a flawed, intensely emotional, father-and-son relationship, and the love between a mother and son.
There is also a beautiful subplot around the friendship between Sanjay and his best friend Kamlesh, who tries to keep him on the straight and narrow.
The strongest scenes revolve around these relationships and it would be best to keep the tissues handy.
The one character who doesn’t quite ring true is the writer approached to pen Sanjay’s biography. For a seasoned author, she seems to take much on face value.
