Student to host concert for fees

A Mitchells Plain resident’s dream of becoming a professor in music was set back when his father lost his job three years ago forcing him to abandon his studies at Stellenbosch University.

Paul Daniels has now decided to grab his dreams by the horns and use his talent and networks to host a concert that will help raise the funds he needs to finish his studies.

The 22-year-old guitarist’s concert titled “Guitar Riff ” will feature different genres from gospel to jazz and afro soul, as well as neo soul and some rock and jazz.

“Most of the songs, will be original music, with some covers in between.

“The reason why I am having a concert is for me to go back to study. I started in 2014 and passed but I could not go back the following year, because in November 2015 my father lost his job and he paid for my studies,” he said.

“I felt really heartbroken because I was the first one in the community and from my father and mother’s side to study. So everyone was looking at me. During that time, I just shutdown, I didn’t want nothing to do with anyone,” he said.

Daniels continued his music career full-time, to help support his family.

He wrote music, taught privately and travelled to Dubai and Qatar where he played in bands.

I want to become a professor and start a music school and studio in Mitchells Plain. There are many talented people who can’t release their music because studios are too expensive.

“I want to bridge that gap, so South Africa can hear what young talent from Mitchells Plain have to offer.”

Guitar Riff will take place on November 3 at Shekinah Full Gospel Church.

Pre-sold tickets cost R70 and R90 at the door. For tickets contact 074 891 1706 or 074 107 6517.
