Triumph on the field
I REFER to your editorial published on Friday, August 10, in which you salute women in sport.
A few weeks ago, while scrolling through the sports channels, I happened to see the last few minutes of the South African women’s hockey team playing against Argentina in the international championships held in the UK.
Although we were bottom of our pool, not having won a match, the score was one all and apparently the Argentinians were a much stronger team.
The commentators were enthralled with the South Africans’ defence, especially as the little goalie (wearing the SA flag as a “doek” on her head) had defended seven corners successfully. When the final whistle blew, our team were ecstatic.
One got the impression that they had won the game. The goalie was interviewed after the match – hers was an incredible performance and the commentator’s comment was: “The South Africans can go home with their heads held high.”
Now isn’t that a lovely story? Irene Meintjes Pinelands
