Travel the world through dance

- Staff Reporter

A TRIP around the world in two hours – 20 countries in dance. Be transported away from the everyday in The Waterfront Theatre Company’s latest production All the World’s a Stage.

It’s taking place at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg from Thursday, August 23, to Saturday, September1. This dazzling production features 60 dancers, more than 300 costumes, 35 dance routines and six choreographers. This show is as action packed as an overseas trip or adventure.

You can samba your way through Brazil, salsa into Puerto Rico and tango around Argentina. Jet off to the US where you’ll find your soul in Memphis, party at Studio 54, razzle in New York and sway to the blues in New Orleans. Explore the culture of India and Japan, discover the magic of riverdance, stop off for a ballet in Paris and sit front row at the Italian Fashion Week, before flying back home to the glorious landscapes of Africa.

Choreographers Shona Brabant and William Jones have created several new works for the show, including Jet Set, Warriors of the Amazon and Praise.

James Bradley presents Ménage à Tango and Slave to Fashion; Simone Marshall-Kleinenberg debuts #Beats!, a tango-inspired piece La Danza and Festivo!; Marguerite Jones’s A Moment in Time and Move Together will take you on an emotional journey, and Genna Galloway brings the original choreography of Keith Galloway’s Living To Do! and Mambo!

In addition to highlighting the best of the college’s dance faculty, All the World’s a Stage is a fundraiser for the college’s bursary fund, which supports the next generation of young artists.

The dancers are from first- to fifth-year students majoring in dance, drama and musical theatre.

Delia Sainsbury, the founder, says: “The dance programme is designed to condition the dancer’s body technically in order to support a wide range of dance styles.”

Get your feet tapping and your adrenaline pumping. Book now, it’s a trip you won’t forget.

Performances are from August 23 to September 1 at 7.30pm, with matinée performances on August 25 and September 1 at 2.30pm. The Masque Theatre is at 37 Main Road, Muizenberg.

Affectionately known as South Africa’s “Fame School” for the performing arts, The Waterfront Theatre College has earned a reputation for creating the “triple threat” of people who can sing, dance and act.

Founded by South African theatre TV legends Keith Galloway and Delia Sainsbury in 1992, The Waterfront Theatre College offers a four-year training programme that is largely vocational with a strong emphasis on developing the skill set relevant to a successful career in either performing or teaching, or both.

The college also offers a parttime programme for school-going pupil aged 5 to 18.

Tickets for the show cost R100 and are available on line via tickets. tixsa.co.za/event/all-the-world-sa-stage. Visit www.waterfronttheatreschool.co.za for more details or contact Sharon Everett at 082 772 8867 or e-mail thegallowaytheatre@gmail.com
