ARCHBISHOP Emeritus Desmond Tutu celebrated his 87th birthday yesterday, with President Cyril Ramaphosa expected to pay tribute to him when delivering the 8th Desmond Tutu International Peace at the Artscape Theatre today.

Ramaphosa’s address will focus on restorative justice in South Africa 20 years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Many took to social media to send the Arch messages of support and well-wishes. He was admitted to hospital more than a week ago for a number of tests.

He was in good spirits, according to family friend and mayor Patricia de Lille who addressed a press conference regarding the latest developments in relation to the bribery allegations against her. This story leads today’s edition.

We report that the DA has distanced itself from the bribery charge against the outgoing De Lille, now that it has been dropped and she is suing for R1 million for defamation.

Fed up with drugs and gangsterism, Blikkiesdorp residents took the law into their own hands when allegedly assaulting a man suspected of dealing in drugs.

Former national swimmer Oneida Cooper swam 16 kilometres from Robben Island where her father Saths Cooper was jailed during apartheid for his political activism, to Bloubergstrand yesterday to raise R70 000 for her non-profit making Making Waves Together South Africa swimming school. Through her efforts, she raised R70 000 for her non-profit organisation.
