TWO DIE AT THE WEEKEND

TWO people died in two separate attacks in Olievenhou­tbosch, Centurion, Pretoria, at the weekend, the SAPS said yesterday.

A man died and two others were injured when a mob, accusing them of terrorisin­g the community at extension 37, attacked them on Sunday.

In a separate incident the same day, two men entered a tuck shop at extension 25, Jackals Street, and robbed it.

“The men then got into an argument and one suspect shot his accomplice,” police said. | African News Agency (ANA)

GIRL SAVED BY A DRONE

LONDON: A missing girl rang police to say she’d been raped but did not know where she was – and then was saved from her attacker when a police drone found her.

The terrified 16-year-old called Lincolnshi­re Police to tell them she had been attacked and said she was still with the rapist. She told operators they were in an abandoned industrial estate with a high fence, but had no idea where.

Police deployed a drone equipped with a thermal camera and the aircraft located the pair within minutes near a drainage ditch in Boston. Officers arrested a man in his 30s. | Mail on Sunday

MAN INJURED BY TRAIN

A MAN, believed to be in his 30s, was left critically injured yesterday morning when he was pulled beneath a train at the Salt River train station in Cape Town.

ER24 spokespers­on Russel Meiring said: “Paramedics found the man lying next to the tracks. An assessment showed that the man had sustained a head injury and was in a critical condition.”

The man was provided with advanced life support interventi­ons before he was transporte­d to Groote Schuur Hospital for urgent treatment. | African News Agency (ANA)

INTERPOL BOSS PROBED

BEIJING: China is investigat­ing the former president of Interpol for bribery and other crimes, Beijing said yesterday, in a notice that indicated the Chinese official might also be in trouble for political transgress­ions.

Meng Hongwei, China’s Vice-Minister for Public Security, was being investigat­ed as a result of his “wilfulness” and has only himself to blame, according to a statement.

Meng is the latest official to fall victim to a crackdown by the ruling Communist Party on graft and perceived disloyalty. | AP African News Agency (ANA)

RONALDO UP FOR AWARD

JUVENTUS forward Cristiano Ronaldo was among the first 10 nominees for the men’s Ballon d’Or trophy announced yesterday, awarded by France Football magazine to the best player in the world.

Ronaldo has won the award for the past two years and five times in total, a record he shares with Lionel Messi.

AMABHARETE SWOOPS IN

THE arrest of eight wanted criminals in Westbury has been lauded by the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.

The arrests came after deployment of the police specialise­d team, known as

Amabharete. Those arrested include four suspects linked to the murder of 31-yearold Bradley Saul. Four more were arrested for possession of drugs. The violent confrontat­ions, which lasted several days, ended when the Amabharete were deployed. | African News Agency (ANA)
