DEADLY ‘MOB JUSTICE’

TWO guards, aged 24 and 28, who allegedly beat to death a person they caught stealing from business premises in Hammarsdal­e, KwaZulu-Natal, made their first appearance in the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

“The deceased was assaulted with iron bars and sticks and died at the scene,” said police spokespers­on, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane.

“Police responded to the complaint and the suspects were arrested for murder.” | African News Agency (ANA)

‘UZALO’ TOPS RECORDS

THE SABC said yesterday it was delighted with the performanc­e of flagship television programme Uzalo which recently became the most-watched programme in South African history.

The group executive for television, Nomsa Philiso, said “the partnershi­p with Stained Glass Production­s keeps exceeding expectatio­ns”.

The SABC said that by the end of last month Uzalo, which is broadcast on SABC1, had broken all records in the history of television viewing in South Africa, reaching 10.2 million viewers. | African News Agency (ANA)

RUGBY GREAT MOURNED

SA RUGBY president Mark Alexander yesterday extended condolence­s to the family and friends of former Springbok winger Theuns Briers, who died of a heart attack in Cape Town on Sunday aged 89.

He made his Test debut against the British Isles in 1955, with his last Test against the All Blacks at Eden Park at the age of 27. The former Western Province player enjoyed the latter part of his life as a farmer.

AFRICA’S burgeoning youth population had the potential to be a demographi­c dividend, but unless properly harnessed could become a demographi­c nightmare.

This sentiment was expressed at the Infrastruc­ture Africa conference in Sandton yesterday during a session titled “Africa’s path to growth – How infrastruc­ture developmen­t will drive growth in Africa”. Moderator Sean Cleary warned of the dangers if the continent did not get key elements such as infrastruc­ture developmen­t right.

SA SWIMMER WINS SILVER

SOUTH African swimmer Duné Coetzee, 15, claimed silver in the girls’ 200m butterfly at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires yesterday.

Coetzee touched the wall in 2:11.71 behind Hungary’s Bianca Berercz, who won in 2:10.37. Michaela Ryan (Australia) was third in a time of 2:13.12.

ZIKA VIRUS CASES IN INDIA

TWENTY-TWO cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in the Indian city of Jaipur, north-western of Rajasthan.

“A Control Room has been activated at the National Centre for Disease Control for monitoring,” the Hindustan Times newspaper quoted the state health ministry as saying.

The mosquito-borne virus, which originated in Brazil, is usually harmless, but babies born by women who contract the disease while pregnant often suffer neurologic­al defects. | Sputnik/ANA
