Trophy paraded through city
MTN8 CHAMPIONS Cape Town City received a rousing welcome by Capetonians when Benni McCarthy’s side took the trophy on a parade yesterday.
Having won the MTN8 competition by defeating SuperSport United in the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, the squad showed off the trophy aboard an open-top bus through the streets of Cape Town. The drive took in the CBD, where they were welcomed by mayor Patricia De Lille. Then it was on to Langa, Athlone, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.
Boss John Comitis said: “This was an opportunity for us to connect with the fans, the communities and Cape Town as a whole. We’ve had great support… and there can be no better way to say thank you than to show off the trophy… It’s our small way of acknowledging how grateful we are for the way in which Cape communities have rallied behind the team.”
Coach Benni McCarthy handed a club jersey and the trophy to De Lille, who said: “I am proud of our MTN8 champions and our own Cape Town City for bringing glory to the City. This is a young club and they’ve achieved a lot over the last two years. I implore Capetonians to get behind the team.”
