AN INVESTIGAT­ION by South Sudan authoritie­s into the strangling to death of two children, aged 8 and 10, allegedly at the hands of their father, is under way.

Radio Tamazuj reported that the son and daughter of the man were murdered in the town of Bor in South Sudan’s Jonglei state on Saturday.

Police said Majok Maketh Koor handed himself over to police in the Tibek area. MURDER SUSPECT HELD

A MURDER suspect was arrested by Blue Security officers in the Durban CBD at around midnight on Saturday.

The security company’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, said officers responded to a call from flats in Diakonia Avenue, Albert Park, where a man was said to be hiding after fleeing a crime scene. “The victim was at a tavern with friends when the suspect approached him. ANTI-VIOLENCE SUMMIT

THE government will hold a presidenti­al summit on Thursday and Friday on gender-based violence and femicide to help end the scourge.

About 2 000 women under the #TotalShutD­own banner marched to the Union Buildings on August 1 and handed in a memorandum to protest against oppression, inequality and violence.

RELATIONS THAWING

THE resumption of bilateral ties between Sudan and Eritrea in the near future is a possibilit­y, reports the daily Al Meghar in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and his Sudanese counterpar­t Omar Al Bashhir, left, are due to meet following a visit by Sudan presidenti­al assistant, Faisal Ibrahim, to the Eritrean capital Asmara in the next few days, the paper reported.

The border between the two countries was closed in January after Sudan accused Eritrea of backing rebel groups and unidentifi­ed opposition groups. Troops were also deployed by Khartoum to the border area. | African News Agency

NATO WORRY FOR RUSSIA

MOSCOW: Ukraine and Georgia membership of Nato would pose an enormous economic and military problem for Russia, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for European Co-operation, Andrey Kelin, said yesterday.
