Engen provides vital relief aid
FUEL company Engen has donated R500 000 towards relief aid for victims who lost their belongings in the recent devastating fires that raged in Khayelitsha, Kosovo and Overcome Heights in Vrygrond.
The fire in Khayelitsha resulted in one person being killed, while more than 1 300 were left homeless, on October 20.
Hours later, more than 1 400 people were left homeless after a fire broke out in Kosovo informal settlement in Philippi.
Nearly a week later, about 900 people were left homeless by the fire in Overcome Heights on Thursday.
With the three fires having triggered a major relief effort from various quarters, Engen’s corporate social investment manager Adhila Hamdulay said their company felt honoured to play a role in assisting Capetonians who have lost everything. “When our community suffers a terrible tragedy like this one, we won’t hesitate to answer the call for assistance, and that is exactly what we have done.
“We channelled our donation through Gift of the Givers to ensure the funds are used to the best possible effect during this traumatic time,” she added.
“While nothing can replace what they have lost, this helps us to ensure we can offer the victims of the devastating fires in Khayelitsha, Kosovo and Vrygrond quality assistance of the highest possible standard,” said Badr Kazi, the organisation’s government and corporate relations manager.
Social Development MEC Albert Fritz said: “While I call on all residents to support those affected where they can, I want to commend the NPOs and individuals who have supported DSD with on-site assistance, including Philisa Abafazi Bethu, Where Dreams Come True, the Gift of the Givers, the Red Cross and Shoprite mobile.”
