Shock, sadness at slaying of top lawyer Mihalik

THE legal fraternity has reacted with shock and sadness following the killing of top lawyer Pete Mihalik in a suspected hit yesterday.

In a brazen attack, Mihalik was shot and killed in his black Mercedes Benz while dropping his son at school in Sea Point yesterday.

His son was wounded in the shooting outside Reddam House just before 8am.

The Cape Law Society said: “The society is shocked and deeply saddened by the reported death of Mihalik, and particularly by the violent manner in which his life was taken.

“On behalf of the president and council of the Cape Law Society, we extend our sincere condolences to Mihalik’s family, friends and colleagues.”

Mihalik had represented several individuals linked to the underworld, and high-profile criminals. He also represented property mogul and former Sotheby’s boss Jason Rohde, who was accused of murdering his wife, Susan. Mihalik’s clients included Colin Booysen, alleged nightclub security kingpin Mark Lifman and suspected 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said the case was being investigated by the AntiGang Unit, and that by yesterday afternoon at least one person had been taken in for questioning in connection with the murder.

Mihalik’s advocate partner, Noorudien Hassan, 45, was also shot and killed outside his Lansdowne home, on November 7, 2016.

Community Safety MEC Dan Plato said: “(The) apparent assassination has become the latest number to be added to the growing death count of gang-related murders in Cape Town and the Western Cape. The callous murder of Mihalik, despite allegedly having protection services, shows to what ends those involved in organised crime will go to carry out the orders of gang bosses and drug lords.”
