Cop on two murder charges declines bail
A TABLE View police officer facing two charges of murder and another charge of attempted murder indicated he would not apply for bail after appearing in court yesterday.
This after the shooting and killing of his estranged wife and his sister-inlaw in Atlantis. The 32-year-old, who had fled the scene with his son in Hector Petersen Street in Witsand, Atlantis, was arrested on Sunday after handing himself over to police the next day. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the case was postponed until November 16 for consultation, and the accused indicated he would not be applying for bail.
The cop allegedly went on a shooting spree; killing one person at the scene and injuring six others – of which, one was his wife and an 8-yearold child – at a social gathering.
The case is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.
“The new development is that suspect’s wife died (on Monday). The (suspect) is in custody for shooting dead his sister-in-law and wife, and injuring five other people in Witsand. It is alleged that the suspect went to his house in Hector Petersen Street and he found a lot of people and asked his wife who these people were.
“The policeman took out his service pistol and fired several shots towards the people, killing one person and injuring six others,” Dlamini said.
The officer’s wife and another woman were taken to Groote Schuur Hospital in a critical condition while the 8-year-old boy was taken to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
