Traversing through the Klein Karoo

- STAFF WRITER

THE iconic Rhodes Quality Dryland Traverse saw about 300 trail runners lacing up yesterday for the four-day stage race, which showcases the classic trails of the Klein Karoo.

Festivities kicked off with a unique prologue that takes adventure-seekers on a magical, underground route through the world-famous Cango Caves.

Event organisers say the Rhodes Quality Dryland Traverse is the only event that has permission to take runners through this area.

The stages ahead include summiting the mighty Swartberg Mountains, breathtaking views of the Great and Klein Karoo and trails that run past the renowned Raubenheimer Dam.

As a sell-out event in 2018, entries have almost doubled since last year’s edition, with an increase in female participants in particular, said organisers.

One of the stand-out runners at this year’s event is Robert Rorich, who recently came 8th at this year’s Otter African Trail Run, which brought the top 10 trail runners in the world to South Africa.

Not only did Rorich outclass many of the international superstars, but he also picked up a new South African record for the course.

Dryland Events Management announced that food manufacturing company Rhodes Food Group would provide the title sponsorship.

This year, seven young athletes were given complementary entries.

The company’s marketing manager, Merlin Norman, said: “We truly value people – the communities we encounter through this event lie at the heart of everything that we do.

“We are privileged to assist these up and coming athletes achieve their personal running goals, and in doing so hope to leave a lasting, positive impact on the Klein Karoo community.”
