Benni: City are a decent outfit and should be among the top-five teams in the PSL

-

BENNI MCCARTHY wasn’t prepared to give too much away as he prepared his Cape Town City team for a PSL fixture against Black Leopards at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday (3.30pm kickoff) – but, asked about the possibility of playing left-back Edmilson Dove in the centre of defence again, his face did betray a bit of a smile.

So, more than likely, the classy, composed Mozambican player will again do duty alongside Taariq Fielies in the middle of City’s defence.

“Edmilson offers us a better stability because he is a left-footer playing on the left side of the central defence. It gives us greater balance and there is a smoother flow to the team. So, yes, if I am looking to keep things the same, then Edmilson will come into contention for the centre of defence again,” said McCarthy.

McCarthy watched Leopards’ 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday and came away rather impressed.

“Leopards’ game (against Chiefs) gave me a good indication of what we are up against,” said the City coach. “They are a newly-promoted team, but they haven’t disappointed.

“If we do the fundamentals, if we work as hard as they (Leopards) do, then we can get the three points. And the three points are important for us to pick up a few stations on the log. We are a decent team and shouldn’t be where we are. We should be among the top-five teams in the PSL – because where we are doesn’t justify the quality of the squad.”
