Bursaries for 11 needy students
BURSARIES amounting to R600 000 were awarded to nine matriculants and two university students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to study at tertiary institutions next year.
The students received their financial lifeline from the Paarl Media Bursary Fund Trust during a recent ceremony, where the trust was assured of the support of one of the largest commercial printing and manufacturing groups in the country, Novus Holdings.
“The trust aims to create opportunities for learners who are hard-working and committed to working towards a brighter future.
“The successful learners have shown exemplary dedication to their studies,” said Novus Holdings group executive of sales and marketing, Peter Metcalfe.
The bursary beneficiaries are Bevan Adams of Paarl’s Klein Nederburg Secondary School; Corne Burger and Kelly Carlse, both of Labori High School; Shenay Govender of Embury Institute of Higher Education; Jessica Hillier of Durbanville’s Fairmont High School; Shannon Klaasen of Franschhoek High School; Amicke Mostert of Paarl Girls’ High School; Kyle Olsen of Wellington’s Huguenot High School; and Jada Phillips of Belhar High School.
University student beneficiaries are Jessey Sasman of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Luan van Wyk of Stellenbosch University.
The learners and students, who are all from the Western Cape, will pursue qualifications in the fields of education, accounting, agriculture and engineering at prominent Western Cape institutions such as CPUT, the University of Stellenbosch, the University of the Western Cape and Embury Institute of Higher Education, according to Metcalfe.
He said successful candidates had to apply and meet certain requirements in order to qualify.
They had to be from a financially disadvantaged background, have leadership attributes, demonstrate community involvement and hold a “commendable academic school record”.
“The bursary award winners are selected following a rigorous process. We are certain that they will do us proud as they embark on this new chapter in their lives,” added Metcalfe. | Staff Writer
