Luthuli House to oppose Eskom’s unbundling
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule has indicated that Luthuli House will oppose calls for the unbundling of Eskom if they include possible privatisation of the power utility. Magashule was speaking in Soweto yesterday at the 107th birthday celebration of Rebecca Kotane, the widow of late Struggle stalwart Moses Kotane. The event was attended by senior alliance leaders, including ANC provincial chairperson, Premier David Makhura. This as Cosatu is staging its national strike today to fight job losses and privatisation.
“We have said to NUM that we understand their worry about retrenchments.
“We told them that our position is that there will no retrenchments at Eskom and that there will never be privatisation of Eskom.
“This must be our public posture. We should not say it in boardrooms and then go out say something else. Workers are worried when they talk about unbundling,” Magashule said.
SACP first deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila said the party is behind Cosatu’s strike today, which will take place in all provinces.
Mapaila accused past Eskom executives of looting and running Eskom into the ground.
“We are appalled by the state that Eskom is in because this is largely due to mismanagement, poor governance and corruption and state capture that entered and decapitated this people’s institution,”
