Rafah Zoo condemned for removing lioness’s claws

INTERNATIONAL animal welfare organisation Four Paws has condemned Gaza’s oldest zoo removing a young lioness’ claws with garden shears, so as to reduce the risk of injury to human visitors.

They also started negotiations with authorities for the closure of the zoo.

The organisation said it had obtained shocking footage from inside the Rafah Zoo, in Israel, which came just weeks after four lion cubs froze to death there.

“For big cats, removing the claws is a particularly vicious procedure, with long-lasting damage. Natural behaviour, such as grabbing food or climbing, is hardly possible without an animal’s claws. Concerningly, since the amputation was not done in a proper vet clinic, the chance of infection is high,” Four Paws said.

“For humans, a lion is a dangerous predator and not a playmate. The zoo owner has shown that he is irresponsible with the lives of humans and animals. We urge the responsible authorities to close the zoo and find the best solution for the animals. Four Paws is ready to help.

“The first negotiations with those responsible have begun. We have been active in Gaza since 2014, and have already evacuated and closed down two zoos in the region. The former zoo inhabitants were transferred to Four Paws’ own sanctuaries,” said Four Paws director in South Africa, Fiona Miles.
