Iraqi teachers strike, demand reforms
BAGHDAD: Thousands of schoolteachers in Iraq started a nationwide strike yesterday, demanding reforms as the country recovers from a devastating Islamic State insurgency.
The two-day stoppage is aimed at improving the educational situation in Iraq and prodding the government to build new schools to cope with the increasing numbers of students, as well as calling for higher salaries for teachers.
Iraq has said it needs more than $88billion (R1.2trillion) for reconstruction of the areas ruined in the anti-Islamic State fight. |
