MARITZBURG United are not resting on their laurels after picking up their first maximum points in four months.

The Team of Choice broke their duck last week when they dismantled Polokwane City 3-1 in Pietermaritzburg.

It was their second league win of the season – the other was in September against Bloemfontein Celtic.

They had to wait for 14 games to break that barren run of results, and it was their maiden victory at home this season.

Chairman at Maritzburg, Farook Kadodia, didn’t want to give anything away when he was contacted by Independent Media.

“It is just one win. We need more wins and then I can talk. We are still in the relegation zone. I need to get four more wins,” Kadodia said.

Maritzburg are rooted at the foot of the table with 14 points after 20 games, but new coach Eric Tinkler has brought a new lease of life to the club.

“The spirit and the mood is good and we want to fight to get out of the relegation,” Kadodia stated.

Maritzburg will travel this weekend to face Cape Town City in what promises to be humdinger of a match at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday at 3.30pm. The two sides shared the spoils at Harry Gwala Stadium at the start of the season. City are also oozing with confidence having beaten Highlands Park to reach the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.

They have been a difficult customer to stop at home. Tinkler will be looking to build the momentum and close the gap between themselves and other relegations candidates. On other hand, Benni McCarthy will be hoping to put some pressure on the title candidates. Both teams need points for different reasons.

Tinkler took over the reins as the new coach of Maritzburg last month from Muhsin Ertugral.

He was defeated by Bidvest Wits on his United debut but came back strong in his second game in charge of the club by beating Polokwane City. FORMER New Zealand wing Julian Savea is not welcome at Toulon anymore and, after his performance in a 19-10 defeat to Agen, should apologise and go home, the Top 14 club’s president said on Sunday.

Savea, pictured, who was part of the All Blacks’ 2015 World Cup winning side, had been a shadow of his former self since joining the French club last year from Super Rugby’s Hurricanes, Boudjellal said.

“I’m going to ask for a DNA test. They must have swapped him on the plane. If I were him I would apologise and go back to my home country,” Mourad Boudjellal told French radio RMC. “I’ve told him that he was free to go and wasn’t welcome at Toulon anymore.”

Savea, who scored 46 tries for the All Blacks in 54 Tests, said he would be at training regardless of the criticism.

“Putting all the negativity behind me and heading into this week with a positive attitude,” he wrote on his Twitter page. “Whether I am welcomed or not I am still contracted to my team and I will continue to train week in and week out with my brothers.” |
