Step back in time at the Company’s Garden

- RAPHAEL WOLF raphael.wolf@inl.co.za

PEOPLE interested in exploring the rich history of Cape Town are invited to join a story-filled walking tour of the Company’s Garden on Heritage Day next week.

The invitation to join the walk and take a step back in time, to be inspired by the beauty and rich history of the gardens that are so central to the City, is being extended by the recently-formed Friends of the Company’s Garden (FCG) organisation.

“So, before you braai this Heritage Day, build up an appetite by taking a fascinating walk through the Company’s Garden,” said FCG chairperson Dylan Tommy.

The walk will be led by guide Garth Angus, Tommy said, who is also the principal of Gardens Commercial High School in the city centre.

Tommy said the in-depth guided walk would take place from 10am to midday and would start and finish at the Company’s Garden visitors’ centre.

“You might be inspired to join the Friends and become a member, which entitles you to a few nice perks and of course a feel-good factor for supporting a historic green lung in the middle of the city,” Tommy said.

“The Friends of the Company’s Garden is a voluntary group of people who care for this important garden in the middle of our city, and everyone is invited to help grow this ecosystem by becoming a member,” he added.

Places Plus representative Alan Cameron said: “Numbers (for the walk) are limited to 20 people (at a time) and I’ve already had four RSVPs just this morning. So I’m a bit nervous that people will be disappointed.”

The annual membership fee for individuals is R100, and R200 for businesses, NGOs and other organisations, said Tommy.

Those who are interested in taking the September 24 tour, can contact Cameron via: alan@ placesplus.co.za.
