Tutoring programme success

- JADE VAN DER VENTEL

WITH an honours degree in psychometry, founder of Tutor Extreme, Marion Trout, is set on giving pupils an academic head start in life.

Founded in March 2014, Tutor Extreme has grown from strength to strength. It was one of the first tutoring organisations operating in Mitchells Plain.

“We started out with three children in a garage. On registration for 2019 we saw over 100 children, and for the past five years we have seen close to 400 children,” Trout said.

Located in Westridge, Mitchells Plain, the centre accommodates grades 1-12 pupils, and offers all subjects of the curriculum.

“I have always had a keen interest in assisting children academically. At the time there were limited resources for tutoring services in the area.

“I saw the need for it and decided to start a tutoring centre in Mitchells Plain,” Trout said.

According to Trout, a child’s study practice is imperative to their lifelong learning.

“When your child struggles, don’t become equally frustrated and shout at them. Have a set routine for them to play after school and when to do their homework.

“Parents fall into the trap of becoming frustrated with the child’s pace and end up doing their schoolwork for them. How will your child learn to work independently?

“Check-in with your child’s teacher so she can offer guidance on topics your child may be struggling with,” Trout said.

As a way of giving back to the community, Trout said: “For every student that joins us, we give back to the Read to Rise initiative in our schools by sponsoring a learner with a book.”

Lessons are available on weekdays between 3pm to 6pm and Saturdays from 9am-1pm. For further details, call Tutor Extreme on 083 411 2286 or email Info@tutorextreme.co.za
