Officer shot and killed during robbery

ACTING provincial police commission­er Sindile Mfazi has extended his condolence­s to the family of police detective Thanduxolo Stuma who was shot and killed in a robbery yesterday.

Stuma was off-duty and walking home in Delft South just after midnight when unknown gunmen pulled up next to him, took his cellphone and fired a shot. He died at the scene.

Stuma was stationed in Elsies River.

Police spokespers­on Novela Potelwa said flying squad members arrested two suspects found with Stuma’s cellphone.

They are expected to appear in court soon.

“Police investigat­ions are yet to determine whether the firearms seized are linked to the murder of the of the Elsies River detective. Further investigat­ions that are currently underway are looking into whether there were other suspects involved. Indication­s are that more arrests are imminent,” Potelwa said.

Mfazi said: “Our investigat­ions currently are focusing on determinin­g which other serious crimes the suspects are linked to, as we curb violent crimes in this Province.”

Elsies River station commander Sandile Sonjani visited Stuma’s family. He described Stuma as a quiet, humble and discipline­d police official.
