CPUT students construct a welcoming space
LANDSCAPE architecture students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) have transformed a vacant courtyard at its Bellville campus into a welcoming and user-friendly space.
Ahead of the task during Construction Week, students attended a series of construction lectures focusing on hard and soft construction drawings, theory and specification. This was done in partnership with Corobrik, which provided the building materials.
Lecturer Johan van Rooyen crafted and implemented the project.
“The CPUT Construction Week helps students gain valuable practical experience and a solid understanding of landscape construction and product specification. It also provides students with the opportunity to find industry placement for workplace-based learning. On completion of the project, we find students have built their confidence and surpassed their own expectations with regards to their landscaping achievements,” Van Rooyen said.
Musa Shangase, Corobrik commercial director, said they had been in partnership with CPUT for six years.
“We seek to upskill the construction and architecture industries where possible as this benefits everyone and contributes to a stronger build sector.
“One way is through CPUT Construction Week which provides students with vital real-world experience, while affording them the chance to interact with manufacturers and professional bodies at the workshop.”
