Don’t miss out on seeing ‘Hamlet’

THE internationally acclaimed production of Hamlet will be on at the Artscape Theatre in April, before it transfers to the original setting of Shakespeare’s masterpiece – Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, Demark.

Since 1816, Kronborg Castle has been home to the world’s oldest continuous Shakespeare Festival, where, over the years, some of the world’s greatest actors have played Shakespeare’s moody Danish prince.

Running in Cape Town from April 1, Cape Town’s Marcel Meyer will join the illustrious list of Hamlets.

The Abrahamse & Meyer production of Hamlet originally premiered at the 2015 National Arts Festival and has since played to rave reviews and standing ovations across Europe, South Africa and the US.

Critics have praised the production as a “tour de force” and “a masterpiece”.

Joining Meyer in the cast are original company members Matthew Baldwin and Jeremy Richard.

This year Graham Hopkins, Rob van Vuuren and Tailyn Ramsamy join the company.

Veteran classical actor Hopkins was last seen in the Mother City as Martin Dysart in Peter Shaffer’s Equus, for which he received a Fleur du Cap Best Actor nomination.

Van Vuuren is no stranger to audiences both as a celebrated stand-up comedian and award-winning actor.

Ramsamy made his professional stage debut in Abrahamse & Meyer’s production of Macbeth in 2018.

“Local theatre lovers and Grade 12 learners have one last chance to see Abrahamse & Meyer’s Hamlet. It features direction and set design by leading Shakespearean director Fred Abrahamse, lighting by Faheem Bardien, costumes by Marcel Meyer and an original score by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder,” organisers said.

Tickets cost R80 and can be booked through Computicket or Artscape-DialA-Seat.
