PAST pupils, teachers and friends of Bishop Lavis Senior Secondary School have set out to raise funds to provide for much-needed resources at the school.

They are selling tickets for Aunty Merle – It’s a Girl, Marc Lottering’s smash hit the comedy show currently on the Baxter Theatre.

The alumni group said they aimed to raise about R10 000, which would be used to fund the school’s training programmes and purchase sports equipment.

Group chairperson, Ivan Carolus, said the fund-raising effort was to bring hope to the school as they faced many challenges.

“We want our pupils to understand that they can attend school in order to become an active player in their communities, their city, their province, their country and in the world.

“We want them to understand that this is all achievable and we will do our level best to walk alongside them,” he said.

Carolus said the socio-economic challenges of the area had directly impacted on the safety of the school.

“The socio-economic challenges in Bishop Lavis include gangsterism, high criminal activity, substance abuse and unemployment.

All have a direct impact on the safety of our pupils, as well as our teachers.

“This has escalated to the extent that our schools in Bishop Lavis cannot host certain events such as carnivals, bazaars and others that are open to the public,” he said.

Principal Kevin Sonn said: “The pupils are very excited about the fund-raiser because the money is going to be used to improve the academic results of Grade 12 learners of 2020.”

Treasurer Brian Redelinghuys commended the alumni group for their efforts.

Tickets cost R160 and can be purchased through alumni by contacting Brian at 082 971 2822 or brianrede80@gmail.com.
