Politician is buried in his prized Merc

- Thami Magubane

A PROMINENT Eastern Cape UDM activist loved his Mercedes-Benz so much that he made a bizarre request to his family that when he died, he wanted to be buried in his luxury German car.

When Tshekedi Pitso died, his family decided to respect his last wishes and at his funeral on Saturday, he was buried in his cherished vehicle.

Images and videos went viral on social media, as people watched the politician’s favourite car being “lowered” into the ground with him.

Pitso, 75, was an anti-apartheid activist who later joined the UDM.

Stanley Pitso said he thought his brother was joking when he said he wanted to be buried in his car.

“He loved his Mercedes-Benzes over the years. I have no idea how many of these cars he owned. He always said when he passes away, he wants to be buried in his car.”

He said Pitso’s daughters said they wanted to honour their father’s wishes, and that they had made arrangements with the funeral parlour.

“The undertakers placed him in the seat as if he was driving, and fastened his seatbelt,” he said.

Party leader Bantu Holomisa had wanted to attend the funeral, but was prevented by the Covid-19 regulations.

Holomisa tweeted: “Eastern Cape UDM leader gets his wish to be buried in his Mercedes-Benz. Rest in peace Sir. I am sorry I missed the funeral and bid you farewell, together with your family and relatives.” |
